Lead Law Update (FAQ Series): Does a “lead free” test require a special certification for the lead technician and the testing device?

We are regularly receiving questions regarding the new Lead Law and have created a weekly “Frequently Asked Questions” (FAQ’s) forum for you as you desire to become more informed of the Lead Law and its complexity.

This week we are featuring a common question:

Question: Does a “lead free” test require special certification for the lead technician and the testing device?

Answer: Yes, “lead free” requires that the testing is performed by a Lead-Based Paint Inspector/Risk Assessor (not a Dust Wipe Technician-as is required for “Lead Safe” inspections). In addition, the testing is performed via the XRF device (like a radar gun) according to Housing & Urban Development/EPA Guidelines.

Most lead testing companies do not offer “lead free” testing because the XRF device is not only costly (over $16,000) but requires an annual certification of its performance.

Lead Testing Services, LLC does perform both “lead free” and “lead safe” testing for our customers.  If you are interested in a “lead free” test, please send us an email.
